The 4K Ultra HD release of John Carpenter's "Vampires" is a robust technological offering, transforming the film into an impressive visual experience. Presented in its native 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the transfer is strikingly detailed, sourced from a new 4K restoration of the original camera negative. Dolby Vision HDR, compatible with HDR10, enhances the film’s richly saturated palette, showcasing the cinematographic work of Gary Kibbe with an unprecedented vibrancy. The presentation embraces a spectrum of bold rusty tones, crimson reds, and deep blacks, which contribute significantly to the atmospheric tension of the narrative. Grain is notably consistent and retains a cinematic quality, eschewing any past tendencies towards aggressive smoothing.
In comparing the new 4K transfer to previous editions, the differences are pronounced. Nighttime scenes and interior environments benefit from intensified black levels and enhanced clarity without sacrificing detail—a testament to the strong bitrate of 85 Mbps for the feature, while maintaining an average bitrate of 94.7 Mbps for the disc. This results in sharper detail around costumes and skin textures, while preserving the film's gritty aesthetic.
Moreover, while earlier releases, including the Superbit DVD and previous Blu-rays, revealed issues such as grain flicker during optical effects and transitions, the current iteration manages these seamlessly. Notably, improvements have been made in stabilizing grain and maintaining color integrity throughout various shot compositions. The HDR application elevates the visuals without altering the intended hues, making this 4K release a must-have for aficionados desiring a definitive viewing experience that holds fidelity to Carpenter's vision and Kibbe's distinctive photographic style.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray of "Vampires" offers two audio track options: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Surround at 4398 kbps, 24-bit and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo downmix at 2025 kbps, 24-bit. Both tracks maintain consistent audio bitrates across the 4K disc and Blu-ray formats. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 track, in particular, stands out for its balanced soundstage and immersive experience, effectively capturing the film's dynamic music and ambient effects. Carpenter's iconic score is a highlight, with rhythm guitar performances prominently presented in the front channels while drums and percussion enrich the surrounds. The mix skillfully captures low-end environmental sounds, enhancing the immersiveness, although some listeners might find certain dialogue scenes, particularly involving Cardinal Alba, initially challenging to discern.
The decision to omit the previously available isolated score from the current release has sparked mixed opinions. While some highlight this omission as a means to optimize the bitrate for the 5.1 mix, others argue it could have been included on the disc without compromising audio quality. The optional English SDH captions provide thorough transcription of dialogue and sound effects, despite minor errors in text accuracy. Comparing this release to prior editions, such as those by Twilight Time and Indicator, this version delivers a superior auditory experience matched only by nostalgia for an Atmos alternative.
Overall, the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track on this release proves to be an impressive auditory journey, inviting audiences into a vividly detailed soundscape from start to finish. For viewers adequately equipped with surround sound setups, this track is the preferred choice. Despite the absence of more advanced formats like Dolby Atmos, this mix offers a robust and exhilarating experience that complements the film's intense narrative and atmospheric tension.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of "Vampires" delivers a compelling experience for fans and newcomers alike. John Carpenter's unique blend of horror, action, and comedy is expertly presented with a new HDR color grade on the Scream Factory 4K edition. The enhancement highlights Gary Kibbe's cinematography, showcasing richer and deeper visuals compared to previous releases. The Dolby Vision presentation offers a significant upgrade with its 2160p resolution, enhancing every bloody and thrilling moment in this Western/Horror hybrid. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is robust, an audible improvement over prior surround tracks.
While the package retains most of the archival extras from the initial Collector's Edition, the absence of new commentary from critics or historians is a missing element in an otherwise commendable set. This edition stays true to Carpenter’s vision of the film, diverging from its literary origins to offer a unique cinematic experience rich with action, levity, and grit. James Woods delivers humor and intensity to his role, enhancing the film's robust entertainment value.

This 4K/BD set is a compelling upgrade from prior Blu-rays, recommended not only for those who own previous editions looking for enhanced quality but also for any fan of genre-blending cinema seeking an engaging audiovisual experience. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

PlotA veteran vampire hunter leads a team funded by the Catholic Church to exterminate a nest of powerful undead creatures in a remote New Mexico desert. The team successfully clears the nest, but during their celebratory night at a motel, they are ambushed by a mysterious and powerful master vampire. The vampire massacres most of the team and leaves the others to escape. The leader, driven by anger and a thirst for revenge, discovers that the master vampire is searching for an ancient relic that could grant vampires the ability to walk in daylight.
In a desperate race against time, the leader joins forces with one of the few survivors, a tough fighter dealing with his demons, and a newly turned vampire woman with visions linking her to the master vampire. Together, they track their adversary, piecing together clues from the woman's vivid visions and unraveling centuries-old secrets hidden by the Church itself. As they close in on the vampire's lair, they must confront not only supernatural threats but also their own personal demons. Their journey through betrayal, fear, and determination leads them closer to a final showdown with unimaginable stakes, knowing that failure could spell doom for humanity.
